A knife attack left five individuals injured, including three young children on Thursday, in Dublin, Ireland. The incident triggered riots in the city center. Authorities are currently exploring various motives, including the possibility of it being terror-related.
Public transport was suspended and patients advised not to travel to a nearby maternity hospital unless absolutely necessary after clashes between riot police and anti-immigrant protesters, who arrived at the scene of the attack beside the main thoroughfare of O'Connell Street, according to Reuters.
Tram services in Dublin city centre have been suspended, operator Luas confirmed on social media.
"They are disgraceful scenes. We have a complete lunatic, hooligan faction driven by far right ideology engaged in serious violence," Garda (Irish police) Commissioner Drew Harris condemned violent scenes after deploying 400 officers to restore public order.
A five-year-old girl was receiving emergency treatment after sustaining serious injuries in the stabbing that happened on Parnell Square East in the city centre, outside the children's school Gaelscoil Choláiste Mhuire, according to a BBC report.
A woman in her 30s was also being treated for serious injuries while the two other children, a five-year-old boy and six-year-old girl, suffered less serious injuries. The boy has been discharged from hospital.
A man in his 40s who was also seriously injured is a person of interest, police said.
