Process of making black sand pottery from clay

CGTN
01:22

Yingjing Black Sand is made from yellow and black clay. Its casting technique could date back more than 2,000 years. It looks so special is because the coal is ground and mixed with the clay. After the craftsman shape the soft clay, the wares are put into a kiln at a temperature of up to 1,300 degrees Celsius. Then, the wares are burned and heated twice with fire. The three raw materials – clay, coal and wood chips – produce a glaze that adheres to the ware's surface, finally giving it a silvery black look.
