The government of Sierra Leone declared a nationwide curfew following a security incident at an army barracks in the capital, Freetown, on Sunday morning.

A notice from the Ministry of Information and Civic Education said some unidentified individuals attempted to break into the military armory at Wilberforce Barracks in the early hours of Sunday.

"They have all been rebuffed," the notice said, adding that the government and state security forces are in control.

Citizens are "strongly" urged to stay indoors to enable the security forces to continue apprehending the suspects, the notice said.

Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio on Sunday urged unity among citizens following the security incident.

"They were repelled by our gallant security forces, and calm has been restored," Bio said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

"The peace of our beloved nation is priceless, and we shall continue to protect the peace and security of Sierra Leone against the forces that wish to truncate our much-cherished stability," the president said.

"We remain resolute in our determination to protect democracy in Sierra Leone, and I urge all Sierra Leoneans to unite towards this collective responsibility."
