CGTN

When it comes to festivals, desserts are often on the menu. For the Xiayuan Festival, a traditional Chinese festival marked on the 15th day of the tenth month on the traditional Chinese calendar, which falls on November 27 this year, there are three well-known traditional desserts: doushabao or sweet bean paste buns; maci, a kind of glutinous rice cake wrapped in sesame seeds; and ciba, another kind of glutinous rice cake that are usually cylindrical in shape.

Xiayuan Festival is one of China's three famous moon festivals, with the other two being the Shangyuan Festival, or Lantern Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the first month on the traditional Chinese calendar, and the Zhongyuan Festival, or Ghost Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the seventh month.

Festivals are a time when people offer sacrifices and worship their ancestors. The food eaten during the Xiayuan Festival also carries people's hopes for safety and prosperity in the year ahead.

The origins of the three moon festivals are related to Taoism. In Taoism, there are three officials: Tianguan, or the official of heaven, who bestows happiness; Diguan, the official of earth who offers absolution; and Shuiguan, the official of water who averts misfortune.

The three festivals simply celebrate the birthdays of the three officials respectively – Shangyuan Festival for Tianguan, Zhongyuan Festival for Diguan, and Xiayuan Festival for Shuiguan.
