BeiDou Navigation System helps link mega tubes for China's undersea tunnel

01:51

The construction of the 6.8-kilometer-long underwater tunnel section of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link was completed on November 28. It consists of 32 tubes, each weighing around 80,000 tonnes and connected by a final joint.

The world's first integrated ship for immersed tube floatation and installation accurately places massive tubes into the seabed trench, ensuring their seamless alignment, and each has a lifespan of 100 years. To ensure the correct deployment, the BeiDou Navigation System is used. The BeiDou satellite antennas on the installation ship match nearby reference stations and can achieve millimeter-level accuracy when installing the tubes.
