Japan urged to 'take seriously' stakeholders' demand for compensations over release of nuclear-contaminated wastewater

The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Tuesday urged Japan to take seriously the stakeholders' demand for compensations over the release of nuclear-contaminated wastewater from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the Pacific Ocean.

The discharge of the nuclear-contaminated wastewater into the sea concerns the health of all mankind, the global marine environment and the global public interests, Wang Wenbin, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, told a regular press briefing in Beijing.

Wang made the remarks in response to reports that the Tokyo Electric Power Company, the plant's operator, has recently initiated procedures of damage assessment for victims in Japan of the wastewater's release into the ocean, which began on August 24.

"The Japanese side should not only take seriously the concerns of its own people, but also the grave concerns of the international community, especially its neighboring countries," said Wang.

He urged Japan to act responsibly and constructively to communicate with stakeholders and take their legitimate claim for damage determination and compensation seriously.
