A UN spokesman said a delegation of senior humanitarian agency executives arrived in the Burkina Faso capital Ouagadougou on Monday to combat the ongoing crisis.

The goal is for the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) to draw attention to the crisis and support initiatives promoting durable solutions for crisis-affected communities, said Stephane Dujarric, chief spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The IASC is the longest-standing and highest-level humanitarian coordination platform of the UN System and makes strategic decisions that shape the humanitarian policy.

Dujarric said the delegation is headed by Joyce Msuya, deputy emergency relief coordinator of the Office for the Coordination for Humanitarian Affairs; Carl Skau, deputy executive director of the World Food Programme; and Mirela Shuteriqi, director for policy of the International Council of Voluntary Agencies.

He said it is to meet during a three-day visit with senior government officials, community representatives, humanitarian and development partners, and the diplomatic community.

One of the poorest countries in the world, Burkina Faso is flanked by Mali and Niger in the strife-torn Sahel.

Jihadists have been swooping into villages, disrupting daily life and imposing their laws, causing residents to flee by the thousands.
