The Crested Ibis, also known as the Red-crowned Crane, is a nationally protected wildlife species in China and is often referred to as the "Oriental Gem." Unfortunately, due to the destruction of wetlands and forests in the past, as well as the use of pesticides and fertilizers, the population of Crested Ibises has dramatically declined and even faced extinction. However, with dedicated conservation efforts, the situation has improved significantly. Now it has become Endangered instead of Critically Endangered.

The conservation of the Crested Ibis in Yangxian County, Hanzhong City of Shaanxi Province serves as a remarkable success story. Through dedicated efforts, the population of this endangered species has rebounded significantly – from seven to over 10,000. In 1981, only seven remaining wild Crested Ibises were discovered in Yaojiagou, Yangxian County, Shaanxi Province. This alarming situation prompted urgent action to save the species. Over the past four decades, Yangxian County, Hanzhong, Shaanxi Province has been at the forefront of protecting the Crested Ibis population. The conservation efforts have included rescuing injured birds, conducting artificial breeding research, and implementing bans on pesticide and fertilizer use within the ibis' habitat.

These measures have gradually led to an increase in the Crested Ibis population. Nowadays, these magnificent birds can be found not only in Shaanxi, Zhejiang, and Henan provinces of China, but also in countries like Japan and South Korea. The success of Crested Ibis conservation in China has become a shining example of global efforts to save endangered species.
