Health authorities in the U.S. state of Ohio are monitoring a pneumonia outbreak among children, and experts say "there has been zero evidence of this outbreak being connected to other outbreaks, either statewide, nationally or internationally."
Officials in Warren County, which is in the Cincinnati area, have reported 145 cases of pneumonia in children aged 3 to 14 since August, according to an update report released in a press Thursday. The caseload is higher than normal and reaches the state's threshold for an outbreak, but there have been no deaths or evidence of increased severity, officials said.
Officials also said the recent illnesses are "not suspected of being a new or novel respiratory virus," but instead appear to be an uptick in the number of "typical pediatric pneumonia cases."
To protect oneself, the report recommended "washing hands, cover cough, stay home when ill and stay up to date on vaccines."
