China Post on Sunday issued special stamps featuring the ancient city of Pingyao in Shanxi Province to mark the 26th anniversary of this more than 2,700-year-old city's inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The newly released set of three stamps and a miniature sheet depict not only iconic architecture but also the overall landscape of the ancient city of Pingyao, which was named a UNESCO world heritage site in 1997 as "an exceptionally well-preserved example of a traditional Han Chinese city."

According to UNESCO, the ancient city of Pingyao is "a complete building complex including ancient walls, streets and lanes, shops, dwellings and temples," whose layout "reflects perfectly the developments in architectural style and urban planning of the Han cities over more than five centuries."
