Staged on the famous West Lake, the Impression West Lake show has become one of the must-see attractions for many visitors to Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province.
Using the lake and its surroundings as its backdrop, this evening show blends typical cultural elements of the West Lake to offer a spectacle of light, music, dance and theatrics to audiences.
Created by renowned Chinese film director Zhang Yimou and premiered in 2007, the show is based on classical Hangzhou folklore and mythology. A new version, "Enduring Memories of Hangzhou," was launched in 2016 during the G20 Summit in Hangzhou.
The new show combines art forms from both the East and the West, featuring such classic Chinese musical pieces as "Lofty Mountains and Flowing Water" and "Jasmine Flower," alongside Tchaikovsky's world famous ballet "Swan Lake" and Beethoven's "Ode to Joy."
The artists perform on a floating stage set slightly below the surface of the lake, making it appear as if they were treading on water. With its combination of natural backdrop and cutting-edge technology, the show extends a varied and captivating visual appeal to the audience in time with the changing scenery.
