The world's first 13,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) dual-fuel container ship was delivered to its French shipowner in Shanghai on Thursday.

Built by the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China's largest shipbuilding company, China State Shipbuilding Corporation, the ship will operate on the South America route.

The ship, which is 336 meters long and 51 meters wide, is one of a new generation of green and environmentally friendly container ships.

It is equipped with the first Chinese-developed engine and adopts a dual-fuel power system of LNG and marine fuel.

Using LNG as power fuel and an intelligent exhaust gas extraction device, the ship can help reduce methane slip by 50 percent and carbon dioxide emissions by 28 percent, according to Chen Jun, general manager at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding.

The ship is one of six 13,000 TEU container vessels the company has built in cooperation with its partner, according to Chen. He said they delivered nine 23,000 TEU ultra-large dual-fuel container ships and recently signed a shipbuilding deal for four additional 24,000 TEU LNG-powered containerships.
