Sitting at an altitude of over 4,000 meters, the Longbaotan Wetlands in Yushu City, Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, is one of the four wetlands listed as a Wetland of International Importance in northwest China's Qinghai Province. It covers a total area of 9,529 hectares, and over one-third of the land is wetland.

In Tibetan, "longbao" refers to a place with fish and birds. The Longbaotan Wetlands indeed provides food and habitat for migratory birds and endemic fish. It is an important breeding ground for black-necked cranes. The bird's population has increased from 22 in 1984 to over 200 now.
