China's southern province of Hainan is supporting the development of new energy vehicles (NEVs) and is actively expanding international cooperation in the sector.

The 2023 World New Energy Vehicle Congress (WNEVC), taking place from Thursday to Saturday in Hainan Province's capital Haikou, has attracted the attendance of over 1,000 representatives from 23 countries and regions.

Volkswagen Group China and the Hainan provincial government signed a framework agreement to strengthen cooperation during the congress.

The agreement includes plans for Volkswagen to support Haikou Technician College and other vocational colleges in their participation in the Sino-German Advanced Vocational Education Project.

Volkswagen also intends to launch a range of mobility services in phases, with the initial phase focusing on services based on its ID. series.

"As we accelerate our 'In China, for China' strategy, we are excited to embark on this new chapter of mutually beneficial collaboration with Hainan Province," Liu Yunfeng, executive vice president of Volkswagen Group China, said in a statement sent to CGTN.

Liu added that his company looks forward to working with the province in making use of the many opportunities provided by Hainan Free Trade Port.

Hainan's provincial government pledged to focus on trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, strengthen investment promotion, and adjust the structure of the outward-oriented economy in the Hainan Free Trade Port at a press conference in August.

Secretary of the CPC Hainan Provincial Committee Feng Fei said at the opening ceremony of the WNEVC that the province will expand international cooperation in the field of NEVs, and create a first-class business environment to support the rapid development of the industry.
