U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Washington, D.C., and discussed the Israel-Hamas conflict, the U.S. State Department said in a statement on Saturday.
Blinken emphasized the efforts to ensure the conflict does not spread elsewhere in the region, the necessity of freeing remaining hostages and the provision of humanitarian aid, according to the statement.
The meeting came after the United States' veto of a proposed United Nations (UN) Security Council resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. The United States and Israel oppose a ceasefire, claiming it would benefit Hamas.
Türkiye has called the U.S. action a "complete disappointment," and Turkish President Tayyip on Saturday denounced the UN Security Council and called for reform of the international body.
