Plant-based tie-dye is an ancient and unique Chinese dyeing technique that uses pigments extracted from natural plants to bind or fold pigments into fabric. As compared to chemical dyes, plant-based tie-dye is environmentally friendly and sustainable.
Emma Nguyen from Vietnam is a volunteer at a plant-based tie-dye museum in Beijing. She wanted to know more about Chinese fabrics and materials, so she came to China to learn tie-dye. She tie-dyed a traditional Vietnamese costume ao dai, giving it a new appearance. Emma said that Chinese plant-based tie-dye not only showcases the beauty and uniqueness of the natural world, it also integrates the relationship between humans and nature into artistic creation.Through tie-dye, Emma connects Chinese and Vietnamese dress culture.
