The table tennis men's and women's singles World Cups will be relaunched in south China's Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) in April 2024, the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) announced on Sunday.

The Galaxy Arena, the largest indoor arena in the MSAR, will host the competitions and "merge the world of table tennis with entertainment, promising spectators a never-before-seen experience," according to the ITTF.

The first edition of the World Cup took place in 1980 and included nothing but the men's singles event. The team event was added in 1990 and then the women's singles competitions in 1996. The team World Cup was cancelled after 1995 and then relaunched in 2007. The singles World Cups were replaced by the World Table Tennis Cup Finals in 2021 and 2022.

The ITTF presented the first Mixed Team World Cup in Chengdu, southwest China's Sichuan Province in December and it was a great success, in the words of the ITTF President and International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Petra Sorling.

"The remarkable success of the Mixed Team World Cup 2023 in Chengdu has set the stage for an exciting future," Sorling said. "Building on this momentum, we are thrilled to announce the return of the Singles World Cups in April 2024 in Macao, China, while the Mixed Team event will make a comeback in Chengdu in November next year. This decision underscores our commitment to advancing the sport globally, and we are confident that we will once again witness incredible events that will further enrich the legacy of the ITTF World Cups."

China's table tennis legend Liu Guoliang, who is also the ITTF vice president, looks forward to hosting the top players around the world in China again.

"China has hosted many World Table Tennis events in recent years, and the enthusiasm of the fans has always impressed our athletes," Liu said. "Macao, China has rich experience in hosting competitions. I look forward to a successful ITTF World Cup in Macao. I also welcome table tennis fans from all over the world to gather in Macao, China again."
