True legend: Giorgio Chiellini's legacy should extend far beyond Luis Suarez's notorious bite

"You have been the most beautiful and intense journey of my life. You have been my everything," wrote the 39-year-old in an emotional post on X. Chiellini culminated his career at Los Angeles FC in the Major Soccer League, with his farewell appearance occurring in the MLS Cup final loss to Columbus Crew last Saturday. His tenure at LAFC was marked by his commanding presence in defense, transforming their backline into an impregnable fortress. Chiellini's remarkable contributions helped LAFC secure an impressive 18 clean sheets across all competitions.

Chiellini's impact on LAFC's achievements cannot be overstated. Under his leadership, the team achieved significant milestones, including clinching the 2022 Supporters' Shield, securing two Western Conference titles, winning the 2022 MLS Cup, and finishing as runners-up in both the 2023 Concacaf Champions League and the 2023 Campeones Cup. 

For all his success in the U.S., Chiellini's feats in Italy are what truly define his illustrious career. While he began his journey with Livorno in 2000, it was his time at Juventus that propelled him into the footballing spotlight. From 2005 to 2022, Chiellini donned the iconic black and white stripes of Juventus, leaving an indelible mark on the club's history. With an impressive tally of 561 appearances, he cemented his status as a stalwart and a linchpin of the team's formidable defense.

Chiellini's leadership and defensive prowess were instrumental in a period of rejuvenation for Juventus, who were determined to reclaim their domestic dominance after enduring a prolonged period of poor form. He played a pivotal role in constructing a solid defensive wall, which became the bedrock of the club's success. 

During his tenure, Juventus embarked on an unprecedented journey, clinching an extraordinary nine consecutive Serie A titles and making two appearances in the Champions League final.

Recognized for his exceptional performances, Chiellini earned the title of Serie A Defender of the Year on three occasions. He was also honored with five consecutive selections to the Italian League's Team of the Year from 2012 to 2018. Furthermore, his trophy cabinet boasts five Italian Cups and five Italian Super Cups.

"For Juventus fans, for 17 seasons, the number 3 stood for one thing, and one thing only: Giorgio Chiellini," said Juventus in a statement. "Everything, always, together. You were always by our side, like a superhero ready to intervene if necessary. In your case, however, there was no shield, red cloak or bat-mobile."

On the grand stage of international football, Chiellini's legacy shines brightly for the Italian national team. With an impressive 117 appearances to his name, he wore the captain's armband in 2019, assuming the role of a true leader on the pitch. However, it was during the momentous Euro 2020 tournament that Chiellini's heroics reached their pinnacle, elevating him to the status of a cult hero.

Throughout the tournament, Chiellini's seasoned experience and unwavering determination were on full display, particularly in his resolute defensive displays. He epitomized the grit and resilience of the Italian squad, serving as an inspiration to his teammates.
