Widespread rain, snow and cold wave weather struck northern China on December 13. The China Meteorological Administration (CMA) issued a yellow warning for heavy snow at 10 a.m. on Wednesday and continued to issue yellow warnings for freezing and cold waves.
Wednesday's yellow alert comes on the heels of a yellow warning for freezing issued at 6 p.m. the day before.

The CMA's chief forecaster, Fu Jiaolan, has forecast that this round of rain, snow and cold wave would have a broad impact, prolonged duration, drastic temperature drop, complex precipitation forms and a certain level of extremity. The cold wave will affect China from west to east and north to south, causing temperature drops or rain and snow in most regions. Snowfall in areas like north China and northeast China will persist for over two days, Fu said.
Certain regions in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the Jilin and Liaoning provinces are experiencing extreme daily snowfall. It is expected that afterward, some areas in north China and northern parts of the Yellow River-Huai River basins will see minimum temperatures nearing or breaking historical records for this period.

According to Fu, the freezing warning issued on Tuesday was the first in the last decade. A yellow alert for freezing is issued when freezing weather is expected in parts of three or more provinces, regions or cities within 24 hours of the first occurrence.
It is anticipated that freezing rain will occur in parts of southern Shaanxi and Shanxi provinces and parts of Henan and Shandong provinces, prompting the timely issuance of the CMA's yellow freezing warning.

Fu also cautioned that this round of rain, snow and cold weather will persist for a long duration, with overlapping areas experiencing heavy snowfall, necessitating precautionary measures against compounded impacts.
Rain, snow, and cold wave could lead to reduced visibility, slippery roads and icy surfaces, potentially causing traffic congestion and accidents. It is recommended that road maintenance services promptly undertake snow removal and ice melting operations.
Older people and children should minimize outdoor activities during the current weather and avoid walking on snow-covered roads.
The low temperatures will also significantly increase the demand for electricity, heating and other energy sources. While ensuring warmth is essential, precautions should also be taken to prevent fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.
