The Los Angeles Dodgers are finalizing a five-year, $135 million contract extension with Tyler Glasnow, the right-handed pitcher they traded for with the Tampa Bay Rays, according to ESPN on Friday.

The Dodgers sent their starting pitcher Ryan Pepiot and outfielder Jonny Deluca to the Rays for Glasnow and Manuel Margot. Glasnow, 30, was supposed to make $25 million in the 2024 season from his previous contract. The Dodgers added another $110 million and four years to it. Moreover, unlike Shohei Ohtani's deal, Glasnow's extension won't include any deferred money.

Glasnow's contract includes an option for the 2028 season. If the Dodgers exercise it, he can make $30 million for that season and see his total salary rise to $145 million. If the team declines it, the right-hander can trigger a $20 million option.

Glasnow threw an earned run average (ERA) of 3.53 with 162 strikeouts, 37 walks and a 10-7 record in 120 innings last season. The Rays had planned to keep him but decided to trade him when his value hit the prime for a prospect in Pepiot. The 26-year-old posted a 2.14 ERA with 38 strikeouts, five walks and a 2-1 record in 42 innings in his second season in the major league in 2023.

Margot is expected to be a good addition to the Dodgers' outfield as Mookie Betts will move to second base full time. Margot will join James Outman, Chris Taylor and Jason Heyward for his defensive duty.

The Dodgers were able to sign such a deal with Glasnow partly because Ohtani agreed to have $680 million of his $700 million guaranteed salary deferred. The two plus Betts and Freddie Freeman are all on long-term contacts beyond 2027 with the team.

The Dodgers won 100 regular-season games last season but lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-0 in the National League Division Series.
