Residents and tourists in south China's Hainan are enjoying a wide range of films at the ongoing Hainan Island International Film Festival (HIIFF), with the island offering outdoor screenings and related activities for the viewing pleasure of excited audience members.
The seven-day festival opened on Saturday in the resort city of Sanya. Twenty-four films were selected from 4,018 entries produced by filmmakers from more than 100 countries to compete in this year's Golden Coconut Awards, where a 13-member international jury will pick the winners.

At the same time, the festival is screening films at movie theaters across the island as part of efforts to connect with local communities and attract more people to the cinema.
Festival organizers have also been hosting a wide range of outdoor screening events to showcase Hainan's unique geographical location, offering the public a unique opportunity to enjoy movies in the island's natural settings amid its beautiful natural landscapes and abundant wildlife.
Locations for outdoor screenings include the top of Luhuitou Mountain, where viewers can see coconut trees and feel the sea breeze while enjoying good movies, the Aranya Sanya community, and the Wanning Riyue Bay surfing resort.

First held in 2018, the Hainan Island International Film Festival was one of the first in a series of projects aimed at establishing Hainan as a pilot free trade zone and a free trade port.
