How good is a realistic Chinese landscape from a millennium ago?

Fan Kuan was one of the most famous painters of the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) with a style that greatly influenced later landscape painters. His Travelers Among Mountains and Streams uses panoramic composition to depict towering and majestic mountains with a vertical waterfall and floating clouds. It was once a sensation during an exhibition in the United States in 1961. Chinese painting master Xu Beihong praised it as "a masterpiece admired by millions of people." So, what kind of visual effects and artistic conception did the artist create that could get such a high evaluation? Liu Yong, a famous author and painter, provides his insights.
