China recently announced plans for the trial run of its first self-built ultra-deepwater drillship in south China's Guangzhou City. Boasting the world's leading ocean drilling capability and named "Mengxiang," which means "dream" in Chinese, the ship is scheduled to set off from the Nansha port for its trial voyage on December 22. The vessel is 179.8 meters long and 32.8 meters wide, can travel 15,000 nautical miles and operate for 120 days without returning to port. It is designed and built based on the principles of "small tonnage, multi-functionality and modularity," according to Zhou Chang, head of the command of the drilling vessel.
