In 2003, an elderly military veteran living in Xiangheli, a village in Kaohsiung, China's Taiwan region, asked the village head, Liu Dewen, for a special favor. He wanted Liu to promise to return his ashes to his hometown on the Chinese mainland after he died. For the past two decades, Liu has assisted with some 200 such reunions, ferrying the urns of deceased veterans across the Taiwan Straits. This is the story of the "Ferryman of Souls" and of the families he has befriended during his journeys.
