With intricate chiseling, ink pounding, lashes of red paint and careful imprinting, a woodblock New Year painting craftsman is picking up his pace ahead of the holiday shopping rush. Traditional Chinese New Year paintings are a common sight in homes across China, carrying auspicious meanings and wishes for dwellers. Li Xiangduo, an intangible cultural inheritor of woodblock New Year paintings in Rizhao, Shandong, has been tirelessly working through the processes of his craft to create his perfect prints. The production involves more than ten steps, all of which are done by hand and result in images that proudly hang in homes over the Spring Festival period.
