China's mega project Changtai Yangtze River Bridge has hit a new breakthrough as its channel bridge Tianxingzhou closed on Friday, marking the completion of that part of the project.

Spanning 388 meters between two main pylons, the channel bridge is a steel truss arch bridge that is 727 meters long in total. It cost 40,000 tonnes of steel, equivalent to the total steel consumption to build the National Stadium.

The staff said the temperature difference in the day and night above the river and the high wind scale causing the bridge to swing made it challenging to construct the bridge with high precision.

Technological tools like monitoring and control systems and smart sensors were used to ensure the bridge would close with a wiggle room of 2 millimeters.

The Tianxingzhou channel bridge is a crucial part of the Changtai Yangtze River Bridge, connecting the cities of Changzhou and Taixing. It is 10.03 kilometers long in total and located in Jiangsu Province.

The complex is the world's first cross-river facility combining highways, intercity railways, and ordinary roads.
