Real Madrid players were filled with an undeniable fire in their bellies as they stepped onto the turf of the Mendizorrotza Stadium on Thursday night. The news had just reached their eager ears that Real Betis had managed to hold the former leaders of La Liga, Girona, to a frustrating 1-1 draw with a late equalizer. The unlikely title contenders had let slip a golden opportunity to snatch the coveted top spot all to themselves before the winter break. Destiny had other plans instead, as the chance fell into the hands of Madrid. All they had to do was conquer Alaves on their own ground.

And it appeared that Madrid were keen on settling the matter swiftly. Barely two minutes had elapsed when Alaves goalkeeper Antonio Sivera thwarted Federico Valverde's strike with a remarkable leg save, stemming from a splendid build-up play originating from the midfield, with Brahim Diaz providing the final pass.

It was a moment of near breakthrough, but alas, it was not to be. Apart from the long-range attempt by Valverde that troubled the Sivera, the attacking prowess of the visitors was rather subdued in a first half that was both toothless and evenly matched, a testament to the home side's commendable performance.

Alaves fully demonstrated their capability in handling the star-studded lineup of Madrid. With a solid defensive formation of four at the back and two wingers ready to exploit the gaps left by the full-backs, the underdogs tactfully executed quick offensive maneuvers to unsettle Carlo Ancelotti's highly-regarded team.

Their most threatening opportunity arose from the left flank, where Ander Guevara embarked on a powerful surge through the central channels, delivering a well-placed pass to Luis Rioja, whose subsequent shot was deflected by Fran Garcia. Under the guidance of Luis Garcia, the Alaves players exhibited relentless intensity and grew in confidence with each passing minute, capitalizing on the referee's rather lenient approach to calling fouls.

Even the standout performers of Madrid's campaign, such as the talented Jude Bellingham and the in-form striker Rodrygo, found themselves contained by Alaves' resolute display. As the game appeared to be heading towards a lackluster goalless draw, frustration began to seep into the minds of the Madrid players.

The match took an abrupt turn shortly after the second half began. With Madrid struggling to maintain control, Nacho Fernandez pursued Alaves forward Samu Omorodion deep into the heart of the field and delivered a fierce and ill-advised tackle. The stupid foul was initially met with a yellow card, but the VAR stepped in to rectify the situation, resulting in the dismissal of the Madrid captain and leaving his team with only 10 players on the pitch.

Sensing the shifting tide, Ancelotti rapidly made the astute decision to bring Aurelien Tchouameni on for Luka Modric, providing cover for the unforeseen setback. The move proved fruitful as Madrid, despite being a man down, managed to assert dominance over the ball. Though they struggled to carve out clear-cut opportunities, their defensive line remained steadfast, even in the face of Alaves' tactical changes, which aimed to inject more attacking urgency through the introductions of Ianis Hagi, son of Madrid legend Gheorghe.

The frustration among the home fans became increasingly audible with every instance of possession loss by their team, almost as if they had a premonition of the impending events. In the dying moments of stoppage time, Madrid launched a spirited attack, resulting in a well-earned corner kick expertly delivered by the talented Toni Kroos. Seizing the opportunity, the unmarked Lucas Vazquez rose above the chaos and executed a determined header, guiding the ball forcefully into the back of the net.

Though it may have been a goal born out of sheer tenacity, its significance cannot be understated. With this crucial victory, Madrid concludes the year 2023 atop the standings, surpassing Girona on goal difference.

There's no denying that Madrid are not displaying their finest form as they're managing to scrape out victories. But it's important to note that they're doing so with a squad plagued by injuries, particularly in the defense. Over the weekend, David Alaba became their third player to suffer a torn anterior cruciate knee ligament, joining the unfortunate ranks of Eder Militao and Thibaut Courtois.

Despite these successive devastating blows, Madrid's relentless climb to the top of the table continues unabated. This resilience serves as a stark reminder to never discount their chances in the title race, regardless of the circumstances.
