Chinese researchers have discovered four new species of fungus during a field survey recently in Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park in south China's Hainan Province. The findings were published on November 22 in the Journal of Fungi.

The four species of Strobilomyces, one of the most noticeable genera of Boletaceae, are named S. baozhengii, S. conicus, S. hainanensis and S. pachycystidiatus.

"When collecting them, their pores will quickly bruise red before gradually turning black," said Zeng Niankai, a professor at the School of Life Sciences of Hainan Normal University and one of the authors of the paper.

Strobilomyces, distributed in temperate, subtropical and tropical regions of the world, plays an important role in maintaining the biodiversity of forest ecosystems.

In China, species of Strobilomyces are abundant. According to the paper, approximately 32 species of the genus have been uncovered currently. Among them, most are from temperate and subtropical China, while a few species are from tropical regions of China.

The discovery of the four new species not only increases the understanding of Strobilomyces species but also further enriches the biodiversity of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, said Zeng.
