An ancient Tibetan woolen handicraft from a county in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region, combined with modern technology from Shanghai and innovative design, is simultaneously stepping onto the world stage and significantly improving the livelihoods of local women.

Pulu is the traditional woolen fabric Tibetans use to make robes, boots, hats and other items. Situated at an average altitude of over 4,000 meters above sea level, Gyangze County in Xigaze City, Xizang has a tradition of weaving pulu.

In February 2023, a group from Shanghai initiated a collaborative effort to support Gyangze in bolstering its pulu weaving industry. Consequently, this part of Tibetan culture has gradually connected with other parts of the country and the world. Rural women, particularly those initially unemployed, have also improved their lives with consistent pay.

"The previous traditional pulu had a relatively simple color and pattern," Yangkyi, an entrepreneur, said. "People from Shanghai have also come to Gyangze to learn how the traditional machine for making pulu is used to deal with the feet and hands parts. On this basis, we developed a new machine which is portable."

In Gyangze, almost all Tibetan women in the countryside can weave. Therefore, with the support of the government and the aid group from Shanghai, entrepreneurs brought together skilled Tibetan women in rural areas to weave traditional handicrafts into colorful finished products.

"In January next year, we will go to Paris, France. So, what is the specific situation? I will keep it secret for the time being," Yangkyi told CGTN.
