CMG releases top 10 China news stories of 2023

China Media Group (CMG) on Wednesday released a list of the top 10 China-related news stories of 2023.

Below are the bulletins for these events.

1. Xi Jinping unanimously elected Chinese president, PRC CMC chairman

Xi Jinping was unanimously elected Chinese president at the third plenary meeting of the first session of the 14th National People's Congress.

Xi was also elected chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC) of the People's Republic of China (PRC) by a unanimous vote.

2. Education campaign launched on the study and implementation of the Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era

In March, the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee decided to launch a Party-wide thematic education campaign from April to study and implement Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.

The campaign goes beyond theory, emphasizing practice as one of its fundamental keywords. CPC members are required to apply Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era in driving Chinese modernization, solving problems that have hindered economic and social development, forestalling and defusing major risks, and exercising full and rigorous self-governance.

3. China downgrades COVID-19 management to Class B infectious diseases

Starting from January 8, 2023, China downgraded the management of COVID-19 from Class A to Class B in accordance with the country's law on the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases.

The focus of COVID-19 management shifted from preventing infection to safeguarding people's health and preventing severe cases. Also, the control measures for at-risk areas and personnel changed from quarantine to hospital visits.

4. China's economy shows signs of steady recovery

China's economic recovery has continued to gather steam against all odds this year, with its GDP growing 5.2 percent in the first three quarters, marking the strongest performance among the world's major economies.

China's total GDP exceeded 126 trillion yuan (about $17.6 trillion). China remains the largest engine of global growth, contributing to around one-third of the world's economic growth.

The country achieved a basic equilibrium in the balance of payments and is expected to continue to take up about 14 percent of the global export market.

5. The third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation held in Beijing

With 2023 marking the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative, China successfully held the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation from October 17 to 18 in Beijing.

Addressing the opening ceremony of the forum, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced eight major steps China will take to support high-quality Belt and Road cooperation. He also held meetings with foreign leaders attending the forum and achieved a series of cooperation consensus.

During the forum, 458 outcomes were achieved, and the CEO Conference saw the conclusion of agreements worth $97.2 billion.

6. China issues a guideline on boosting the growth of the private economy

In mid-July, the CPC Central Committee and the State Council jointly issued guidelines on boosting the growth of the private economy, promising to improve the business environment, enhance policy support, and strengthen legal guarantees for its development. Relevant departments and local governments have followed suit.

In late July, the National Development and Reform Commission unveiled 17 measures to encourage private investment further. It also worked with multiple departments and jointly released 28 measures to boost the growth of private enterprises in market access, factor support, legal guarantee, enterprise service, and business environment.

In line with the country's overall economic recovery, the private sector saw marginal improvements during the January-September period, posting faster growth in investment in the secondary industry and steady industrial output.

7. China's 2023 grain output hits record high

China's grain output rose 1.3 percent year on year to a record high of 695.41 million tonnes in 2023, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed.

This is the ninth consecutive year that China has registered a grain harvest of over 650 million tonnes.

According to the NBS, the country's corn output increased 4.2 percent from 2022, while rice and wheat production decreased 0.9 percent and 0.8 percent, respectively.

To encourage farmers to grow grain, the central government increased the minimum purchase price of wheat and rice and improved grain subsidy policies for corn and soybean farmers in 2023.

With the country's grain output reaching a new high in 2023, it has laid a solid foundation for the country to advance rural revitalization across the board and move faster to build up its strength in agriculture.

8. China holds the 31st FISU World University Summer Games and the 19th Hangzhou Asian Games

China successfully held the 31st International University Sports Federation (FISU) World University Summer Games in Chengdu, southwest China's Sichuan Province, and the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province.

The Chengdu Universiade has become a platform for young college students across the globe to interact with each other, making China's contribution to creating a more united and better future for the world's youth.

The Hangzhou Asian Games is not only a grand sports event, but also a stage for exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations. The green and smart organization has again contributed Chinese wisdom and strength to large-scale international event organizations.

9. China issues additional 1 trillion yuan in sovereign bonds to support disaster relief

Heavy rainstorms hit regions in north China in July and August, leading to flooding and geological disasters.

At urgent times, the CPC Central Committee, with Xi Jinping at the core, kept standing firm in putting the people first and once again provided powerful backing for all those affected.

China issued an additional 1 trillion yuan (about $139.9 billion) in sovereign bonds in the fourth quarter of 2023 to support rebuilding disaster-hit areas and raise the country's disaster relief capabilities.  

10. China achieves greater sci-tech self-reliance and strength, makes breakthrough in tech innovation

China has solidly promoted high-level self-reliance and strength in science and technology and implemented the innovation-driven development strategy since 2023, continuing to make new breakthroughs in scientific and technological innovation.

China launched the manned spaceship Shenzhou-16 on May 30. It was the first crewed mission in the application and development stage of China's space station. In October, the country launched the Shenzhou-17 manned spaceship, sending its youngest trio crew to space.  

The C919, China's self-developed large passenger aircraft, completed its first commercial flight from Shanghai to Beijing in late May, marking its official entry into the civil aviation market.

After five years of design, building and a subsequent trial voyage, China's first domestically-built large cruise ship, the "Adora Magic City," was delivered in Shanghai in November, with its maiden voyage scheduled for January 1, 2024.

To date, China has been able to build an aircraft carrier, a large liquified natural gas carrier and a large cruise ship – the most challenging shipbuilding projects.
