A Chinese mainland official said on Wednesday that "the ties of kinship with our compatriots cannot be severed" as businesses from China's Taiwan region rushed to offer their support for Gansu Province after it was struck by a 6.2-magnitude earthquake last week.
Communities and compatriots across Taiwan have demonstrated their concern for their mainland counterparts in the disaster-stricken region, with companies including Foxconn, Want Want and Minth Group having contributed donations and supplies, said Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council.
Up until Tuesday, businesses from Taiwan had donated over 40 million yuan ($5.6 million), he said, citing rough figures.
Chen expressed the mainland's appreciation for the support provided by these communities. "The deep familial bond and mutual assistance among compatriots are unbreakable and unstoppable," he said.
