With their adorable round heads and appearance of giving a permanent smile, nicknames given to Yangtze finless porpoises have included "smiling angels" and "underwater pandas." As part of a major national effort, measures to protect them have encompassed in-situ conservation, ex-situ conservation and artificial breeding. Integrated together, they have achieved a successful case worthy of study for other endangered species of cetacean across the world.
