China welcomed 17 giant pandas back home from various countries around the world in 2023. At present, 18 countries and 20 institutions are cooperating with China on protecting the beloved bears, with 56 giant pandas now living abroad. As of December 28, 32 panda cubs have been born and survived overseas, of which 22 have since returned to China, according to the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. The 17 pandas that returned to China in 2023 came from Japan, the United States, France, the Netherlands, Malaysia, Britain and Germany.
