After the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games, China has continued to embrace sports growth as multiple international sports events were staged across the nation throughout the year. Here is a review of some of the most dazzling sports events that took place in China in 2023.

31st FISU Summer World University Games
Dates: July 28 – August 8, 2023
Location: Chengdu, China
Slogan: Chengdu makes dreams come true
The 31st edition of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) was the first world-class multi-sport event to take place in western China.
Beijing hosted the Games in 2002 and Shenzhen in south China's Guangdong Province in 2011.
Harbin, capital city of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, hosted the FISU Winter World University Games in 2009.
The FISU Games in Chengdu featured a total of 269 events across 18 sports. In addition to 15 mandatory sports, it also included three optional sports – rowing, shooting, and Wushu.
Around 6,500 student-athletes from 113 countries and regions took part in the Games.

19th Asian Games

The Hangzhou Asian Games featured 40 sports, 61 disciplines and 481 events, with breaking and esports making their debut as official medal sports.
Around 12,000 athletes from 45 countries and regions shared unforgettable moments in Hangzhou, marking it the third time that China hosted the continental multi-sport event, following Beijing in 1990 and Guangzhou in 2010.
Team China clinched 201 golds, 111 silvers and 71 bronzes, finishing atop the medal tally for the 11th consecutive edition since 1982.
Over 3.05 million tickets for Hangzhou Asian Games were sold with revenues exceeding 610 million yuan ($83.5 million), organizers said on October 7.
"We are seeing sky-rocketing ticket sales and the total number is more than 3.05 million tickets sold, generating more than 610 million RMB ticket sales," Hangzhou Asian Games chief spokesperson Mao Genhong told a press conference.

Fourth Asian Para Games

Slogan: Hearts Meet, Dreams Shine
After the 19th Asian Games, Hangzhou hosted the fourth Asian Para Games from October 22 to 28.
A total of 3,100 para athletes competed in 501 gold medal events across 23 disciplines in 22 sports. Para Taekwondo, Para Canoe and Go were included for the first time in the program. Blind Football and Rowing that were not featured at the 2018 edition also returned.
Hangzhou became the second Chinese city to host the para games, after Guangzhou in 2010.
Team China topped the medal table with 521 medals, including 214 golds, 157 silver and 140 bronze medals.

Snooker: Shanghai Masters, Wuhan Open and International Championship
This year, three prominent snooker events were held in China.
Shanghai Master, first held in 2017, ran from September 11 to 17 this year at the venue of Shanghai Grand Stage, where world No. 1 Ronnie O'Sullivan of England claimed the title.
Wuhan Open was held between October 9 and 15 in Wuhan, central China's Hubei Province.
Judd Trump of England clinched the title.
The 2023 World Snooker International Championship took place in north China's Tianjin from November 5 to 12.
O'Sullivan and top Chinese player Ding Junhui displayed their superior skills in the international A-level tournament.
China's Zhang Anda took the title after defeating O'Sullivan in the semifinal and overcame Tom Ford of England in the final.

Tennis: China Open and Shanghai Masters
The annual China Open and Shanghai Masters are both hard court events that take place in Beijing and Shanghai respectively.
China Open are comprised of the 22nd edition of Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour 500 men's event from September 28 to October 4, and 24th edition of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) 1000 event from September 30 to October 8 at the National Tennis Center in Beijing.

Rated as ATP 1000 event, the 12th Shanghai Masters took place at Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena in Shanghai from October 4 to 15 this year.
In Beijing, Jannik Sinner of Italy won the men's singles title and Iga Swiatek of Poland claimed the women's singles title.
Croatian-American pair Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek won the men's doubles title while Czech-Spanish pair Marie Bouzkova and Sara Sorribes Tormo triumphed in the women's doubles final.
In Shanghai, Hubert Hurkacz of Poland took the title and Spanish-Argentine duo Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos won the men's doubles title.

ITTF Inaugural Mixed Team World Cup
Dates: December 4-10, 2023
Location: Chengdu, China
The first-ever International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Mixed Team World Cup was held in Chengdu, with the world's top 18 teams competing in an innovative mixed team format.
Team China continued dominating the sport as they made history to win the first-ever ITTF Mixed Team World Cup champions.

ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup
Dates: December 8-10, 2023
Location: Beijing, China
Beijing was one of the five cities across the world that hosted the International Skating Union (ISU) World Cup Series in the 2023-24 season. Other cities were Montreal of Canada, Seoul of South Korea, Dresden of Germany, and Gdansk of Poland.
At the Capital Indoor Stadium in Beijing, top skaters competed in men's, women's and mixed relay events.

ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final

Location: Beijing, China
The world's top figure skaters gathered at the National Indoor Stadium in Beijing from December 7 to 10 to participate in the ISU 2023-24 Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final and juniors' final in events of men's singles, women's singles, pair skating and ice dance.

FIS Freeski and Snowboard Halfpipe World Cup
Dates: December 6-9, 2023
Location: Zhangjiakou, China
The 2023-2024 International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) Freeski and Snowboard Halfpipe World Cup was held at Genting Snow Park in Chongli District, in Zhangjiakou, north China's Hebei Province.
Two-time Olympic champion Gu Ailing won the women's freeski gold with a dominant score of 94.25 points.
