A rogue wave smacked people and vehicles on December 28 in Ventura, California, as powerful swells were generated by the stormy Pacific Ocean.
Eight people were taken to hospitals for treatment, and Ventura County closed beaches, piers and harbors through December 31. Similar waves also overran beaches on the West Coast and Hawaii, flooding parking lots, streets and triggering evacuation warnings for low-lying areas.
