As 2023 draws to a close, Yaowen Jiaozi, a Shanghai-based magazine that focuses on the use and development of the Chinese language, has published its top ten buzzwords of the year – one of which is "xianyanbao." In Chinese, "xianyan" means conspicuous or eye-catching, while "bao" refers to a person with certain characteristics. So the word "xianyanbao" is used to describe a person with a strong individuality, or things that stand out from the crowd, like a unique cultural artifact in a museum. In southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, several bus shelters have earned the nickname "xianyanbao" due to their artistic, exaggerated or creative appearance.
