As the New Year holiday enveloped China, a wave of ice and snow tourism enthusiasm warmed the wintry air. Social media buzzed with images of snowy escapades, turning the nation's chilliest spots into sought-after destinations.

In a significant uptick, Tongcheng Travel reported a 194 percent increase in domestic ice and snow tourism compared to the previous year, with hot spring destinations enjoying a 178 percent rise on the first day of the holiday.

Northern cities like Harbin, Changchun, Yanji, Dalian, and Songyuan emerged as popular choices, drawing crowds eager to immerse themselves in the enchanting winter landscapes, as indicated by online travel agency Tuniu's data.

Responding to the increased demand, the China Railway Shenyang Bureau Group rolled out an additional 45 passenger trains to accommodate the rush. Meanwhile, the China Railway Harbin Bureau Group dispatched 38 additional trains to various icy locales, ensuring that travelers could easily reach their frosty retreats.

The fervor for winter wonder extended beyond the north. In the south, Sichuan's Xiling Snow Mountain area kicked off the 24th South Country International Ice and Snow Festival, captivating visitors.

Chongqing Municipality began its winter season with over 20 diverse activities, offering everything from skiing to snow games, welcoming all to celebrate the season's joys.

To sustain this boom, regions across China have introduced significant incentives. Beijing's Changping District, partnering with travel platforms, rolled out winter cultural and tourism consumption subsidies, enticing more visitors to its hot springs and ice activities.

Jilin Province launched its consumption stimulus for the 2023-2024 snow season, offering 30 million yuan ($4.24 million) in ice and snow consumption vouchers and another 10 million yuan in transportation subsidies. Likewise, Liaoning Province plans to distribute 150 million yuan in consumption vouchers to attract global audiences to its scenic icy splendors.
