Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chinese president, on Monday exchanged New Year greeting messages with Kim Jong Un, general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) and chairman of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

The two leaders also jointly announced the designation of 2024 as the China-DPRK Friendship Year and launched a series of activities.

China is ready to work with the DPRK to ensure that bilateral ties move forward with the times for greater development so as to better benefit the two peoples, and continuously make new contributions to safeguarding regional peace and stability, Xi said in his message.

In recent years, the traditional friendly and cooperative relations between China and the DPRK have entered a new historical period, he noted.

The two sides have closely engaged in strategic communication, deepened practical cooperation, strengthened coordination and cooperation in international and multilateral affairs, and promoted the continuous development of bilateral relations, he added.

China is unswerving committed to maintaining, consolidating and developing the traditional friendly and cooperative relations between China and the DPRK, said Xi.

In his message, Kim said the two countries will launch activities surrounding China-DPRK Friendship Year to enhance exchanges in areas such as politics, economy and culture, and strengthen coordination in the common struggle to safeguard regional and world peace.
