Linebacker Bradley Chubb of the Miami Dolphins will miss the rest of the 2023 National Football League (NFL) season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee, the team's head coach Mike McDaniel announced on Monday.

Chubb went down without having contact with anyone in the fourth quarter of the Dolphins' 56-19 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on December 31, 2023. He was carted back to the locker room and never came back. The game was long gone when the injury happened. As a result, McDaniel was under a lot of criticism on social media platforms for having the starting defenders on the field when there was no need to do so.

"I mean, in hindsight, I would absolutely not have wanted him out there if I would've known that he was going to get hurt. ... It doesn't look very smart at all," the coach expressed his regrets. "The players wanted to go back in and play and finish the right way heading into next week. And I have the ability to tell them no on everything in this situation. There's plenty of decisions that I'll cross examine. ... The intention is always purposeful. And I made the call that the guys that went out there, they wanted to be out there. I would like a time machine, for sure."

The Dolphins didn't just lose a three-time Pro Bowl pass-rusher in Chubb, but their sacks leader (11) of the season. In his sixth NFL season, the 27-year-old now has torn ACLs in both knees. He suffered the first one in his left knee in 2019.

The Dolphins also have to deal with the absence of cornerbacks Jaelan Phillips, who underwent a surgery on a torn right Achilles in November, and Xavien Howard, who quit in the first quarter of the lost game to the Ravens with a foot injury. McDaniel said on Monday that he doesn't think Howard will need surgery, but he may not play against the Buffalo Bills in the regular season finale either on January 7.

The Dolphins are currently 11-5 and leading the American Football Conference East. The Bills (10-6) are right behind them. Therefore, the result of the game between the teams on January 7 will decide which of them wins the division title and the matchups in the playoffs.
