At least 64 people were confirmed dead in Ishikawa prefecture after a massive earthquake hit the area in central Japan and the vicinity, local authorities said on Wednesday.
The death toll was expected to climb as rescuers battle aftershocks and poor weather to comb through rubble.
More than 31,800 people were in shelters, as authorities warned of landslides and heavy rain.
