Eleven people were injured after a fire broke out in a building in Tokyo's Shinjuku area on Thursday, authorities said.

The Tokyo Fire Department said it received a report shortly after 4:20 p.m. local time that a fire broke out in a 12-story building located in a busy commercial and shopping area near Nishi-shinjuku subway station.

The fire destroyed approximately 50 square meters of the third and fourth floors, with 11 people sustaining injuries due to smoke inhalation, it said.

The fire started in one room of the building and was extinguished after about two hours, it added.
