Rare Fowl Sketched from Life is a representative work of Huang Quan, an artist from the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period (907-979). It was created as a model sketch for his son to learn bird-and-flower painting from. This small piece of artwork, which is "crammed" with 24 lifelike rare birds, doesn't seem to follow the rules of composition. However, such a work is considered a model of Chinese Gongbi painting. Professor Fei Jun from the Central Academy of Fine Arts explains how exquisite the sketch is.
