PSG clinch historic 12th Champions Trophy, yet lingering concerns cast a shadow

To the casual observer of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), it can be quite a shock to learn that the top-selling jersey for the football giants doesn't belong to the world's highest-paid player Kylian Mbappe, but rather to the South Korean prodigy Lee Kang-in. However, for devoted followers of the club, it comes as no surprise that Lee has garnered such overwhelming popularity. 

Despite the departure of Lionel Messi and Neymar during the summer transfer window, which left a void in PSG's star power that Mbappe effortlessly filled, the importance of Lee should not be underestimated. The 22-year-old once again showcased his talent on Wednesday night, netting the opening goal just three minutes into the match and forcing Toulouse into an uphill battle in the final of the Champions Trophy.

At a clash between the reigning champions of Ligue 1 and the holders of the Coupe de France, PSG showed their superiority over Toulouse right from the opening minutes. Lee, in particular, played a crucial role in their dominant offensive display, capitalizing on their team's cohesive build-up play to expertly convert Ousmane Dembele's volleyed cross into a goal. It was a testament to PSG's overall control of the game and their ability to make their dominance count in the attacking third.

Ever since Lee made the move to Spain at the tender age of 10 to join Valencia's academy, he has been hailed as one of South Korea's most promising talents. With 62 appearances for the La Liga side under his belt, he eventually made the switch to Real Mallorca in 2021 and became one of the key stalwarts in the Spanish side.

However, it was his transfer to the French capital in a $24-million deal that truly allowed him to break through. In just 13 starts, he has already managed to score three goals and provide two assists. His exceptional technique, tactical adaptability and relentless work ethics have quickly endeared him to both the fans and his teammates. 

PSG coach Luis Enrique, who has openly expressed his delight on having Lee at his disposal, repeatedly praised the youngster's ability to excel in both attack and defense. "Lee has a lot of qualities," noted the Spaniard. "He works really hard at both ends of the pitch and doesn't lose the ball under pressure."

With Lee and Mbappe spearheading PSG's relentless attack, Toulouse found it difficult to break out of their own half. However, when they managed to mount an offensive, they posed a threat and came close to scoring when Thijs Dallinga hit the post. 

However, Mbappe duly put an end to any doubts just before halftime. After receiving a pass from Bradley Barcola, he took control of the ball, left three defenders bamboozled and unleashed a wonder strike past the helpless goalkeeper. 

Toulouse showed improvement in the second half but failed to convert their efforts into a goal. PSG, content with their lead, patiently controlled the game, coming close to scoring a third when Achraf Hakimi struck the post from a long-range free kick.

While Toulouse put up a fight in a late rally, they never truly threatened PSG, allowing Enrique's side to cruise to their record-extending 12th Champions Trophy. Beyond the joy of lifting the first trophy of the season, PSG's performance was one of their finest this season, with their newfound hero Lee shining brightly in a dazzling offensive display, pointing towards a promising future. 

Nevertheless, PSG now face concerns with Lee's upcoming departure for the Asian Cup in Qatar, where South Korea are expected to be one of the favorites. If Lee and his team progress to the final, his return to PSG will be delayed until before their Champions League clash with Real Sociedad on February 14. 

Complicating matters further, Mbappe's contract expires at the end of the season, granting him the freedom to engage in discussions with other clubs during the winter transfer window. 

Should both Lee and Mbappe be unavailable, can PSG's other attacking options step up and fill the void in the title race? It is a question that most PSG fans would rather not contemplate.
