The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) denied firing artillery on Saturday, saying that it detonated explosives instead as a deception, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Sunday.

The Defense Ministry of the Republic of Korea (ROK) said on Saturday that the DPRK had fired some 60 rounds of artillery shells from the western coast earlier on the day.

In a statement carried by KCNA on Sunday, Kim Yo Jong, vice department director of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, said the detonation of explosives imitating the sound of naval artillery shells was to see how the ROK military would respond, KCNA said.

There have been no immediate comments from the ROK in response to Kim's remarks.
