Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on Monday that he proposed to designate the powerful earthquake that struck the Noto Peninsula in central Japan on January 1 as a disaster of extreme severity across the nation.

Kishida instructed the relevant ministries and agencies to move forward with procedures toward a cabinet decision at a meeting on Monday.

Once designated, the central government will raise subsidies to local governments for the restoration projects in quick-hit areas.

As of Monday, the death toll has climbed to 168 in the Ishikawa prefecture and 323 others are still unaccounted for, said local authorities.

Meanwhile, snowfall and landslides are complicating rescue and relief efforts as over 3,300 people are still stranded in Ishikawa, Kyodo News reported.
