00:56

Altay Prefecture in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has been experiencing spells of snowfall since January 8. As much as two to four centimeters of fresh snow has piled up in Burqin County.

Accumulated snow depths of over 20 centimeters were observed on January 9 on the mountain road leading to Kanas scenic area, where an avalanche left a 20-meter road section in two-meter-deep snow. Traffic police have subsequently closed roads in the scenic area.

Known for its ski resorts and abundant snow, Altay is a popular destination for winter tourism.
