South China Sea disputes and broader China-Philippine relations

Disputes in the South China Sea between China and the Philippines have been increasingly a serious cause for concern, with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi calling the relationship at a “crossroads.” What’s noticeable is that frequent maritime confrontations took place following growing U.S. military presence in the Philippines. So what is at stake in the South China Sea? What has brought events to this stage? And how will Beijing and Manila go forward from here after a year of friction? Joining us are Prof. Chen Hong from East China Normal University; Prof. Anna Rosario Malindog-Uy, director and vice president for external affairs of the Asian Century Philippines Strategic Studies Institute; and Warwick Powell, adjunct professor at the Queensland University of Technology and the chairman of Smart Trade Networks.
