Timeless charm of old towns Bern and Lijiang

Switzerland's Old City of Bern and the Old Town of Lijiang in Yunnan, China, are both famous tourist destinations, sharing similarities despite being located in different countries and regions.

Founded in the 12th century, the Old City of Bern features buildings dating from a variety of periods, including 15th-century arcades and 16th-century fountains.

Most of the medieval town was restored in the 18th century but it has retained its original character. The buildings are preserved and boast unique designs and detailing, attracting architecture enthusiasts and tourists alike.

Across the European continent to the Yunnan Province in southwest China, the Old Town of Lijiang was built in the late Song dynasty which was around the 13th century.

Known for its mixed ethnic culture and stunning natural scenery, the well-preserved ancient town features buildings, stone bridges, flowing canals, beautiful gardens, and an ancient water supply system.
