Chinese FM: Results won't change basic fact that Taiwan is part of China

The results of the Taiwan regional leadership election will not change the basic fact that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Sunday.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks when asked about China's views on cross-Straits relations and the situation in Taiwan after the leadership election there.

While meeting with the press with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry after their talks, Wang said the Taiwan regional election is China's local affairs, and the results won't change the general consensus of the international community to adhere to the one-China principle.

"Taiwan has never been a country. It was not the case in the past, and it will never be in the future," Wang emphasized, adding that "Taiwan independence" cannot and will not succeed.

Anyone seeking to pursue "Taiwan independence" is splitting China's territory and will be punished by history and law, he warned, adding that anyone who violates the one-China principle is interfering in China's internal affairs and infringing on China's sovereignty, and will surely be opposed by all the Chinese people and the international community.

"Taiwan independence" seriously threatens the well-being of Taiwan compatriots, damages the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation, and will seriously undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits, Wang said. "It is a dead end."

He said China will eventually achieve reunification, and Taiwan will return to the motherland. 

"We believe that the international community will continue to support the Chinese people's just cause of opposing 'Taiwan independence' separatist activities and striving for national reunification based on the one-China principle," he said.
