00:48

Thousands of military and police officers raided several prisons in Ecuador on January 14 in search of weapons, ammunition and explosives and to restore order.

All 178 prison staffers who had been held by inmates at seven prisons in Ecuador were freed, the SNAI prisons agency said on January 13.

Prisoners had held 158 guards and 20 administrative staffers as hostages since January 8 amid a sharp increase in violence in the country.
